“Conflict Resolution”

A proven model for effective communication

Why should you care?

  1. Some conflict and questioning is good, so we need to be ready to accept and incorporate feedback into our plans, ideas, and work processes.
  2. We all experience conflict and misunderstanding with co-workers, clients, customers, suppliers, and especially our superiors in the organization.
  3. There is never a week in any person’s life when conflict management skills are not essential to her/his well-being and progress within and outside of the organization.
  4. Learning to read the “signs” of impending conflict will enable you to understand hidden issues fueling workplace conflicts.
  5. Practice handling these conflicts and issues will enable you to experience greater success in your career.

Dr. Don Capener brings 27 years’ experience as an award-winning entrepreneur, executive, academician and administrator to his post. Dean Capener is first and foremost an entrepreneur, and spent a considerable amount of time in senior management roles in advertising agencies and corporate environments such as Leo Burnett and Reebok. After starting Above the Rim apparel with his brother while running a small advertising agency in San Diego in 1988, both companies grew into profitable ventures and were sold. Capener’s second start-up, Netcentives, went public via NASDAQ in 1999. While CMO at Netcentives, he helped drive the marketing architecture and developed systems to distribute airline miles as rewards for online purchases.

His academic career began in 2001 when Capener became professor of marketing at Monmouth College in Illinois. He was tenured and promoted to associate professor after four years. He was named Professor of the Year in 2006. Dean Capener, who is fluent in Japanese, served Monmouth as the chair of business and Vice President, including a year on loan to Waseda University in Tokyo as a visiting professor. He began his duties at Jacksonville Univ. in July, 2012. Dean Capener earned a Ph.D. in international management from the International School of Management in Paris. His master’s in business administration was conferred by the Thunderbird School of Global Management and his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University. Capener started as a division one basketball athlete at the University of San Diego before transferring to BYU.

As a young patrol officer he rode “a beat” in downtown Jacksonville, where he developed relationships with citizens and business leaders, believing early in his professional life that connecting with citizens was very important to the success of what Agency is trying to accomplish: reducing and solving crime together with citizens who are engaged with their officers.

He quickly developed a reputation as a police officer who cares about people and likes to work with them to solve their public safety issues.

Sheriff Williams earned his way up the ranks to the appointed position of Director of Investigations and Homeland Security. Through his leadership, strengthening partnerships with federal law enforcement agencies, JSO deploys some of the most advanced technology available in the battle against domestic terrorism, the drug trade, and organized crime.
